Barney Frank (D-MA) to Hold Massachusetts 4th District Town Hall Meeting – Dartmouth, August 18, 2009 – Rumors of Frank’s Retirement Race Through MA

Addendum: Contrary to Anonymous Comment posters This meeting is confirmed and Open to the Public.

Barney Frank (D-MA) will hold a “Town Hall” meeting on Health Care Reform, in Dartmouth, MA on August 18th. The meeting has been moved to the Dartmouth Council on Aging, 628 Dartmouth Street, Dartmouth, taking place from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Frank, who is a proponent of the Obama Administration’s Health Care Reform program, will be available to take questions from his constituents; it is expected to be a very well attended meeting.

Frank, who has yet to confirm his intent to run for a another term in the 4th district, is rumored to be retiring in order to concentrate on a run at the Senate. The seat in question is Kennedy’s, who will be up for re-election in 2012, and, with Kennedy Legacy a larger part of the DNC, it is more than likely that a Kennedy will attempt to run for the seat, which would push Frank into retirement. The rumors are based on a new book that is due to release in October, an over-the-top glowing review of Frank’s political career, being published by UMass University Press. A quick read of the advance copy gives one the impression that this is more “Fiction” than fact - and one can make a fairly safe prediction that this Title will not make the New York Times Best Seller List. A Massachusetts political insider suggests that Frank will use this book as a springboard for his campaign for the soon to be vacant Kennedy Senate Seat. The speculation may have come from a Boston Globe article in 2004, where Frank spoke about positioning for a Senate Seat – Kerry’s. Had Kerry won the Presidency, then Frank had intended to run for the Senate.

That said, 8 years later, the same may not apply, and Frank may not have the political clout to go up against a brand as solid as “Kennedy”, specifically when Democrats in Massachusetts refer to Frank as the “DNC’s Sarah Palin”.

Frank faces opposition in the 4th in 2010 from several candidates: Earl Sholley Republican candidate, Keith Messina (No Party Designation) and Herb Robinson, Democrat (no website). Of (those candidates who have filed with the FEC – Sholley, a populist, Conservative Republican, leads in contributions – source: FEC filing as of June 30, 2009). Should Frank indeed be retiring, it will be interesting to see who comes out of the woodwork to file before the June, 2010 Deadline (Major Party candidates). The major party and independent candidates will face a primary in September, with the general election in November, 2010.

It will, therefore, be interesting to see how Barney Frank, best known for his relationship with Freddie and Fannie, mortgages, on-line gambling, and the like, will handle this particular Town Hall meeting. One the one hand, if Frank is positioning himself for a Senate Run, (somewhat unlikely and unconfirmed), he may cut back the rhetoric and try to appear more moderate in order to attract the majority of voters in the state who are designated as unenrolled), if he intends to run, once again, for his Congressional Seat or if he indeed intends to retire, expect vintage Frank. In either event, this meeting should prove to be both enlightening and entertaining.

FYI - Barney is NOT holding a "town hall meeting on healthcare", as other members of congress recently have. The event on August 18 in Darmouth was scheduled months ago and is not being organized by his office. (I called and got the scoop.) He will simply be addressing a Dartmouth Democratic group on various issues, including healthcare. But this is NOT being billed as one of those Torches & Pitchforks affairs we've seen across the country.

Confirmed: THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Apparently, we have different sources - the meeting is open - and you are incorrect - check reference here.
The Anonymous poster - closed meeting, Democrats only, Pitchfork remark - very interesting

I never claimed the August 18 meeting was not open to the public. What i attempted to correct is your assertion that it's a "town hall meeting" about healthcare. Neither Barney Frank nor his office is billing this as "town hall meeting". Please contact one of Barney Frank's offices and get your facts straight, as i did, with very little effort. BTW -"Pitchfork" is mild considering the conservative crackpots showing up armed with guns and holding signs such as "death to Obama" as occured today in Maryland at a Ben Cardin "town hall".

The "Death to Obama" sign at Ben Cardin's town hall was reported yesterday by J. Taylor Rushing from The Hill. You must register to view. Back to topic - When is a non-town hall meeting really a town hall meeting? Apparently when a couple of GOP hacks tell you it is by email, while the congressman's office denies it by phone. Best of luck stirring up conservative crazies with your disinformation campaign. Sadly, it's all your side has anymore.

The Secret Service is investigating a man who authorities said held a sign reading "Death to Obama" outside a town hall meeting on health-care reform in western Maryland.

The sign also read, "Death to Michelle and her two stupid kids," referring to the first name of President Barack Obama's wife, said Washington County Sheriff's Capt. Peter Lazich.

Hi Sam,
I’ve got that link here at NBC, including a photo of the idiot holding the sign. Sam, it boggles the mind that one or two idiots (from either side of the political spectrum) can suddenly exemplify an entire political party – From my Point of View (and this is what my blog is, my opinion, as opposed to reporting news) those who are ridiculous enough to put up signs or make stupid comments regarding a president (either current or the recent past), are just that – I just posted (yesterday) an opinion re: Rachael Maddow of MSNBC, who ran a piece on the “anti-reform” movement and drew a ridiculous conclusion regarding one of the individuals who was attending a health care forum/town hall – it is that the news, regardless of the network, uses a bit of “sensationalism” in order to drive ratings – my point is that this has been happening for quite some time, I don’t care if it is Air American, NPR or Rush Limbaugh – they are all design to “entertain” –and of course, the more “entertaining” they are, the higher the ratings.
Meanwhile, when there is a debate, regardless of the side one is on, should one or two or a dozen bozo’s act out of turn, then the entire “side” is painted badly. It’s as if I were to say every Democrat believes in Socialism and is a Marxist – which would be ludicrous. (Get my point?)
Oh, tip – on blogger (and other applications) in order to get your link to go “live” and be clickable – so that readers don’t need to copy and paste into a browser – use this link here as a guide.

By the way - any thoughts on those rumors (which came via email from a Democrat) re: Congressman Frank's retirement?

It seems to me, that Barney Frank is feeling the hostility of the people in his District. Which is why he has hit the campaign trail early. These "town halls" are nothing more than campaign events for Barney.

I live in Barney's district and the people here have had enough. Barney has never represented their interests. Barney has taken his own issues to Washington and has left his district alone to deal with its own woes.

I am relieved to know that many of the die hard Barney fans are throughly disgusted with this self-serving politician. They have joined the camp of Barney's only serious challenger, Earl Sholley. It will be nice to have a fiscally responsible congressman, like Earl Sholley, representing the district.

Plan for your retirement Barney!

First - I'm in Barney's district and I fail to see the purported "unhappiness" with him. We just had an election in November and he won by a landslide. Sure, the handfull of rightwingers down here will always be griping about him, but from slips and slurs i've heard and read over the last few years, it's his sexuality that really most upsets them. The republican they chose to run against Barney in 08 is, after all, an unapologetic homophobe, as i've already illustrated.

As far as Barney "retiring" to seek the senate seat, I guess he could. But it's all a bit sketchy, given Kennedy's condidtion. If Ted were to resign soon (which I doubt as much as Bobby Byrd resigning), or perhaps die before the end of his term, there would be a special election to fill the remainder of the term. Barney's chances of success would ultimately depend upon who else tossed their hat into the ring, and who has the big-money backing.

On ther other hand, the legislature could also undo their 2004 changes (made in order to prevent Romney from choosing Kerry's succssor, had he won the presidency) and put the decision back in the hands of the Governor to appoint a temporary replacement. I suspect that scenario might lend itself better to a Senator Barney Frank, who could then run as an "incumbent" come 2010.

It is inconceivable to me that an intelligent person would not be outraged by Barney's performance in the house. He has voted for every tax increase ever proposed. He supports "hate crime" legislation unconditionally which a) continues the elimination of the double jeopardy clause under the 5th amendment to the constitution and b) restricts free speech covered under the 1st amendment.

In addition to his support for higher taxes and his assault on the constitutional liberties for individuals under the constitution he is for government run institutions like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac holding an asset base of 2 to 3 percent. He is also in favor oh his own pitiful self receiving favorable loans from banks.

So, at the end of the day, what do we have in a district that is not feeling outraged by their representative. I submit we have unthinking zombies for the most part and calculating marxists to keep them in line.

Oh, by the way handwitch, which one are you.

Anonymous: what mule squeeze this man spouts. He admits 23 years of abberant behavior. I wish some real constituants had the gift of gab to quiz him on his direct responsibility for plunging the nation in into financial ruin for supporting sub prime mortgages and standing tall for Fannie-Mae while thousand of creeps defaulted on mortgages.
